In addition, any toxins to which an animal is exposed are normally detoxified by the liver. This means that when you feed that animal's liver to your dog, there is always the potential that harmful toxins
Many other fresh food companies will take the approach of using organ meats in their dog food, but at Nom Nom we want to get as much of the nutrients as we can from foods, while also having a clear and predictable safety factor.
Many pet parents will be gravitating toward products that maybe have increased organ meats, and organ meats certainly contain a lot of trace minerals, a lot of vitamins as well. However, that can be variable depending upon the source: the animal from which the organ was taken. So chicken liver may have a different composition than beef liver, and that variability in vitamins and minerals can be somewhat unpredictable.
In addition, especially for animals raised for food in certain environments, any toxins to which an animal’s exposed are normally detoxified by the liver. By feeding the liver, there is always the potential that if there were toxins within that liver, then they could concentrate in that area, and we could be feeding harmful things that the food animal was eating and extending that on to the pet.
Therefore, while many of the fresh food companies will take that approach of using organ meats, but at NomNomNow, we want to carefully balance and get as much of the nutrients as we can from foods but also have a clear and predictable safety factor so we do not have excesses or deficiencies relative to what your animal needs. That is really the purpose of a custom vitamin and mineral blend in combination with the ingredients of the whole food: to really give that optimal health and margin of safety without some of the potential risks and complications of organ meats.
