Learn : Understanding Fresh Pet Food

Why Aren't Fresh Pet Diets Common?

A fresh diet requires someone to invest the time and labor in preparing a balanced, veterinary-formulated recipe, and then actually cook every meal. Most owners don't have the time or knowledge to do this and rely on the convenience of dog foods such as kibble or wet foods that can be easily picked up at a pet store (or delivered) and then served with no additional steps needed.

Fortunately, it is now possible to have fresh food for dogs delivered, making it even more convenient to serve the healthiest fresh diet possible. This means the team at Nom Nom invests the time and labor into crafting these fresh diets and preparing them every week so that you don't have to. Hopefully, fresh diets for dogs can replace the compromise on nutrition of the past.

As a rule of thumb, a dog at a healthy weight should have a visible waist when you look at them from the side and from above, though we encourage you to talk to your veterinarian when determining an exact number.

Fresh diets are simply not more common because they take a lot of labor, so they are difficult for pet parents to prepare, and it also takes some foresight in order to think about what type of nutrients are best for an individual pet. When you think about your dog, your dog is quite different than any other dog, and for a fresh diet to be tailored and prepared, it is going to take a fair amount of work because it is also difficult to ship to your door.

In a commercial sense, there have not really been services that were providing this. Clearly, we know that something that comes out of a large bag, like a kibble, is much more convenient in one sense as compared to preparing your food. Fortunately, now there are options like Nom Nom that will prepare these diets for you, tailor them to your individual dog’s needs, and really establish an ongoing relationship where we are trying to figure out what the best diet is for your individual dog and how to push forward with feeding to maintain optimal health.
