The Best Dog Food for Dogs With Allergies

It can be hard to watch your pet suffer from allergies—especially when the cause is unknown. Allergies can present in a variety of ways, with many different reactions, from dry, itchy, and red skin to digestive issues. Your dog may be itching, scratching, or biting, or experiencing tummy troubles like vomiting or diarrhea that aren’t fun for either of you.

While environmental allergens or fleas can cause allergies, many reactions are caused by a pet’s diet. The five most common food sensitivities reported for dogs are beef, dairy, wheat, lamb and chicken.

How do you know what’s causing your dog’s allergies? One way to determine this is through an elimination diet trial: simplifying what your dog is eating and then gradually adding ingredients back in to see when symptoms resolve and then flare back up.

But this can be challenging with many of the pet foods on the market, which have long lists of ingredients, are highly processed and contain many common allergens.

For dogs with food allergies, switching to a fresh diet is an excellent choice. Many pet parents report that a change to a fresh diet solved or reduced their pet’s allergy problems.

They also comment that their dog’s skin and coat look better after switching to fresh food, in addition to their dog having more energy and maintaining a healthy weight. This may be because a food allergen was removed, or because the diet contained nutrients helpful for controlling environmental allergies (allergy to pollens, dust mites, grasses, etc.).

At Nom Nom, our recipes are all cooked fresh and made with human-grade, high-quality ingredients and no artificial ingredients or fillers. They are carefully balanced with the right amount of protein to help maintain muscle mass, strength, and support all the essential functions of the body. All of our fresh dog food recipes also include healthy oils, such as fish oil or coconut oil, to promote healthy skin and combat allergies.

On our recipes page, you can see the full ingredient list for each recipe, so you can easily avoid any with ingredients your dog may be allergic to. If you’re not sure which foods are causing your pup’s problems, we suggest starting with Nom Nom’s Pork Potluck recipe so long as your dog hasn’t had pork before. Board-certified veterinary nutritionists formulated this specifically for dogs with allergies and sensitive tummies. It may also be helpful to order a Sampler Pack so your pup can sample all of our recipes (unless you are doing an elimination trial).

Fresh is a great option for dog food for dogs with allergies. A fresh diet has the potential to make a world of difference in your pet’s health. Many of our customers whose pets suffer from allergies have seen great success with Nom Nom. You can read some of their stories here:

Rocket’s Story

“His allergies have cleared up, his itchy belly has gone away. His stools are smaller and the diarrhea is gone. I think he's calmer and happier now that he's not itching, too.”

Bailey’s Story

“The difference is amazing. He does not lick his paws anymore and he can hardly wait for the next meal. Not only is he not biting his paws but he LOVES his food!!"

Oliver’s Story

“The change was immediate. He’s 1000% better. I think that the right approach is to go to the source of the problem. If a dog has allergies, don’t just treat the side effects. Treating it as a systemic whole is better in the long run. And you end up saving money as far as vet bills and the impact and wear and tear on your dog.”
